NEWS & EVENTS

Visitors were invited to drive onto Ford Island and Pacific Aviation Museum Pearl Harbor's 4th "Biggest Little Airshow" Saturday, August 20 and Sunday, August 21, 10am to 4pm. Spectators were greeted by 100 aircraft on the tarmac—both real and remote control models--candy bombings for the keiki, Hangar 79 tours to see the new MiG Alley Korean War Exhibit, the Restoration Shop, the P-40 Kittyhawk, helicopters and other aircraft in the 85,000 sq. ft. battle scarred hangar, plus free concerts each day by WET & Loaded Dice, 12:30 to 2:00pm.
Admission was free to the public. The public was invited to drive on to Ford Island, park free at the Museum, or board free shuttles to the Museum at the Arizona Memorial Parking area, 9am to 4:30pm.
For two days, the local RC organization the Birds of Paradise and Mainland pilots from the Academy of Model Aeronautics piloted their massive remote controlled 1 to 5 scale planes for dogfights, candy "bombings," aerobatics, and more. Due to its popularity, the show was expanded, with more planes and helicopters, dogfights, warbird reenactments, jets, and two big days of flying, food, real aircraft to explore, and prizes.
At the event, there were free tours of Hangar 79, which still bears the bullet holes of the December 7, 1941 attack. Inside, guests saw helicopters, fighter planes, and the Lt. Ted Shealy Restoration Shop--the 1941 machine shop which is busy restoring the Museum's aircraft. They'll also got up close and personal with an F-14 Tomcat, F-15 Eagle, F-86s, P- 40, MiG-15, and the Museum's new "MiG Alley" Korean War Exhibit.
For the regular admission fee ($12 adult/$7 keiki, kama`aina and military), visitors explored the Museum's Hangar 37 and "fly for freedom" in the Combat Flight Simulators ($10 additionally). All other Airshow activities were free that day.
According to Executive Director Kenneth DeHoff, "The Flight line opened at 10am with a traditional military color guard, aircraft flyovers, and all aircraft on display. The aerial remote control flight demonstrations were from 11am to 4pm and we invited everyone to visit us and enjoy this family-friendly free event and salute to Naval Aviation."
Specialty acts were performed by the Birds of Paradise include: Pattern, 3-D fixed wing and helicopter aerobatic flights, South Pacific battles, "Candy Bomber" drops, and a Skycam helicopter. There were remote control aircraft in the air and on static display, including, jets, helicopters, F-22s, warbirds, B-17s, P-38s, Corsairs, OV-10s and more.
