The umbrella fund provides an opportunity for individuals and organizations to partner with Pacific Aviation Museum Pearl Harbor to make a difference to the pooled scholarship fund. Separately named funds may also be established within our endowed scholarship fund to support young people. These separate scholarship funds, named for the donor (individual or group), have defined and met organizationally-approved guidelines for their purpose and selection criteria; and are executed within Pacific Aviation Museum Pearl Harbor parameters.
Donate to Pacific Aviation Museum Pearl Harbor Scholarship
Pacific Aviation Museum Pearl Harbor has established a specially-endowed Scholarship Fund that perpetuates our mission and vision, and supports the dreams of young people pursuing a future that includes aviation.
There are two ways to donate:
Donate to the “Pooled” Scholarship Fund – Named Pacific Aviation Museum Pearl Harbor Scholarship, this fund is a collection of donations made by many people or organizations that individually, do not meet the minimum level of support required to establish a “Named Scholarship” as noted below. These gifts may include memorials or special tributes. Pooled together, they represent an endowed fund. The pooled fund provides an opportunity for individuals and organizations to partner with Pacific Aviation Museum Pearl Harbor to make a difference through their donations. As this fund grows, the interest will grow. The interest will be designated annually to support the goals of the fund – advancing student achievement in aviation.
Donor Named Scholarship Fund – Donors can establish a separately-named fund within our endowment set up to achieve specific donor-driven goals. These separate scholarship funds, named for the donor (individual or group), have defined and organizationally-approved guidelines for the purpose and selection criteria; and are executed within the Pacific Aviation Museum Pearl Harbor parameters. The minimum donation to establish a Donor Named Scholarship Fund is $10,000 to ensure an annual interest investment of $500 to support the fund’s goals.

Scholarship Agreement Process:
The scholarship “agreement process,” includes input from both the donor (individual or group) and Pacific Aviation Museum Pearl Harbor leadership. Reviewed from both the museum’s fiduciary perspective and our Education Department’s execution perspective. Each agreement must be approved by the Museum’s Board of Directors’ Executive Committee to ensure donor expectations and requirements can be met. Once approved, the scholarship will be featured on our website where the student application process begins.
Individuals and groups are welcomed to donate to existing scholarship funds or to consider establishing a separately-named fund. A minimum donation of $10,000 is required to establish a named fund. That will ensure the annual interest will yield a sufficient award offer to applying youth. In all cases, only the interest of the fund will be awarded. The principal will remain protected. Pacific Aviation Museum Pearl Harbor
This pooled fund will continue to expand. Undesignated memorial gifts, and specifically-identified donations, will support its growth. Once the pooled source reaches the minimum level — as outlined in the scholarship vision — interest derived from the fund will be used to support academic and/or flight training pursuits of selected students.
Frank Der Yuen Aviation Scholarship
Frank Der Yuen was an internationally respected aeronautical engineer, airline executive and consultant. A graduate of Harvard and MIT, he designed the all-weather, self-propelled passenger loading bridges for airliners that are used in every major airport on earth today. Mr. Der Yuen also served as Executive Director of the Honolulu Airlines Committee, and vice president of Aloha Airlines. He was one of the designers of the Daniel K. Inouye (Honolulu) International Airport, and helped create Pacific Aerospace Museum that was once housed there.
The Frank Der Yuen Aviation Scholarship offers financial grants to Hawaii residents who have been accepted, or are enrolled in, an aviation-related program at an accredited trade school, college, or university.
Col. Robert P. “Rob” Moore Scholarship
Col. Moore enjoyed many years of flying as a civilian pilot. His interest and engagement in flying began in Raleigh, NC. He pursued higher levels of pilot certification throughout his career, obtaining the Air Transportation Pilot certificate in multiengine airplanes (Gulfstream II/III typed rated), and Commercial Pilot rating in single engine land and sea airplanes, gliders and lighter-than-air craft. Col. Moore, an FAA Flight Instructor certified to instruct in several aircraft, enjoyed teaching. He remained active in the aviation community as an aviation business owner, President of the General Aviation Council of Hawaii, and a volunteer on the Board of Directors of Pacific Aviation Museum Pearl Harbor. It is through these experiences that Col. Moore has become aware of the high cost of obtaining pilot certifications at all levels. For many individuals seeking such career paths, the cost can be a deterrent. It is Col. Moore’s desire to assist people in achieving the joy in aviation that he has personally enjoyed. The scholarship awards, offered along two paths outlined below, will help deserving students with the support and incentive needed to continue their study.
Scholarship One: Supports individuals acquiring their initial FAA aircraft pilot certificate. The scholarship can be used for any level pilot certificate, including: 1) private, sport, recreation and 2) in any category of aircraft—airplane, rotorcraft, glider, or LTA. Drone pilot certification is NOT included.
Scholarship Two: Awarded to FAA Commercial Pilots (or ATPs) getting their initial or additional FAA Certified Flight Instructor (CFI) certificate in any FAA Category aircraft. The applicant must have already satisfactorily completed the FAA-required written test(s) for the CFI certificate, if applicable. A copy of the test completion certificate(s) will be provided with the initial application.
Criteria / application requirements for both scholarships:
- Submit a short (one-page) statement of why the applicant wants to be a pilot or how getting the CFI Certificate will improve what the person can offer to the aviation industry.
- Meet the appropriate eligibility requirements:
- Hawaii resident
- FAA age and/or rating requirements for the certificate sought according to 14 CFR 61
- Passed an FAA medical examination
- Enrolled in or intent to enroll in a flight training at a collegiate flight provider or an FAA FAR 141 Certified Flight School.
Funding may be distributed to the flight provider and the student. For a collegiate program, money may be advanced. For a FAA FAR 141 Flight School, funding may be distributed after student completes and the school attests to the achievement of certain benchmarks (usually solo or after 15-20 hours).
Flight objectives for the scholarship funding must be completed within one year after the scholarship award.

The Col. Robert F. Szul Scholarship Fund
Robert Szul, known as Bob, was a dedicated volunteer with Pacific Aviation Museum Pearl Harbor. As an active volunteer, Bob worked to help build, and maintain, a safe and fun educational experience for youth. Through his exceptional character, he was able to convey his love of flight along with the instilled values from his own military training and service. He served as a mentor and advocate for young people, knowing his own aviation experience inspired and motivated students with whom he connected. At the museum, Bob reliably and consistently volunteered for education programs. He saw first-hand how involvement in these programs supported future goals, achievement, and success.
This Scholarship Fund will support classrooms and youth organizations experience and participate in the dynamic education programs offered at Pacific Aviation Museum Pearl Harbor.
